Specify the tape by joint, facing and substrate
A butyl seal is a joint detail rather than a universal repair strip. The same roll width can perform differently on coated steel, aluminum, cementitious board and polymer membrane. For a comparable project quotation, provide the joint drawing, substrate finish, expected movement, water exposure and the required protective facing.
The technical targets above are a starting point for a single-sided tape used on metal-sheet joints. Agree the exact product classification, test substrate and acceptance record for the supplied grade. Laboratory heat and cold-bend checks do not establish the installation temperature or an unconditional outdoor service life.
Pressure-sensitive butyl needs continuous contact. A clean, sound surface, a compatible primer where needed, careful rolling and suitable compression or cover detailing matter as much as the nominal peel figure. Order a representative roll sample when the project uses coated metal, porous concrete or a membrane with uncertain compatibility.
Applications
Flashings and Penetrations
Detail roof curbs, skylights, pipe collars and gutter junctions where a continuous pressure-applied seal can be formed on a prepared surface.
Membrane Laps and Repairs
Use a compatible butyl configuration for selected polymer-membrane laps or patches only after checking the membrane surface and system approval.
Concrete-to-Metal Transitions
Plan a suitable facing, substrate preparation and primer where porous mineral surfaces meet metal or prefabricated building components.

The protective face, butyl layer and release liner are specified together. A faced patch tape and an exposed double-sided lap strip should not be treated as the same product.

Measured Adhesion After Conditioning
A project can require peel checks at standard conditions and after heat, alkali or water conditioning on the intended substrate, rather than relying on a generic strong-adhesion claim.

Installation guide

Check the drawing, substrate and water path. Set tape width, thickness and backing for the actual lap, penetration or transition; allow for required overlap and compression.
Prepare and Trial the Surface
Remove loose coatings, rust, dust, oil and moisture. Check whether porous surfaces need a compatible primer. Test adhesion on the project substrate before bulk installation.
Apply Without Stretching
Cut to length, position the tape, progressively remove the liner and press from the center outward with a roller. Avoid air pockets, bridged corners and stretched edges.
Inspect the Completed Detail
Check continuous contact, overlap continuity, termination and panel fastening or cover details. Protect the tape during subsequent work and inspect representative adhesion where specified.

Frequently asked questions
Is this tape the same as a bitumen repair tape?
No. This page covers butyl-rubber sealing tape. Bitumen repair tape uses a different adhesive chemistry; compare substrate compatibility, facing, exposure and system approval before substituting one for the other.
Can one tape seal both metal roofs and concrete joints?
The substrate changes the adhesion test and preparation. State the actual metal coating or mineral surface, then select and trial the tape and any primer for that joint.
Does the −40°C bending result mean installation at −40°C?
No. It describes a laboratory bending check. The allowed application temperature is a separate property of the supplied grade and the prepared substrate.
Can the butyl layer remain exposed outdoors?
Specify an exposed-duty protective facing and check the complete detail. A hidden lap strip or fleece-faced tape intended for overcoating should not be assumed suitable for permanent open exposure.
What should a bulk-roll inquiry include?
Send substrate and joint drawings, facing type, width, thickness, roll length, total meters, color, exposure, destination port and any required test or packaging specification.
