PVC and TPO are both used for hot-air-welded single-ply roofs. For a commercial roof without unusual contamination, shortlist products that meet the same project requirements, then compare the complete installed system and supply cost. If grease, process chemicals or an existing roof are involved, resolve compatibility first. Neither material is the better choice for every roof.

This guide compares exposed commercial and industrial roofing options. Tunnel liners, pool liners and other below-grade sheets require their own application-specific specifications.

PVC vs TPO: what changes in a procurement decision?

PVC means polyvinyl chloride. TPO means thermoplastic polyolefin. Both belong to the thermoplastic single-ply roofing family, but they use different material formulations. TPO roofing formulations are plasticizer-free; flexible PVC roofing is a different formulation family. This distinction alone does not establish which product will last longer on your roof. A white surface and a welded seam do not make two products interchangeable.

Whichever material you shortlist, use the same checks for roof attachment, tested reflective properties and quotation scope. A difference in material name does not make these requirements optional.

Use this comparison alongside the PVC membrane product options and TPO membrane product options. Confirm the roof-grade configuration in the quotation; a product family page may also cover materials intended for other applications.

Start with exposure and the roof assembly

Warehouse or commercial roof

Prepare one project brief for both alternatives. State the roof deck, building height, insulation, drainage layout, penetrations and proposed attachment. Ask the supplier to identify the membrane construction and the components included in each option.

A request for “white membrane, 1.5 mm” leaves important questions open. Does the offer include reinforcement? Which accessories are compatible? Is the attachment detail supported for the proposed deck? Keep these items consistent before deciding which quotation offers better value.

Reinforcement, backing and attachment

Internal reinforcement and a fabric backing are different construction features. Internal reinforcement is within the sheet; a backing is attached to its underside. Ask the supplier to identify both rather than treating “reinforced” and “fleece-backed” as equivalent descriptions.

  • For a mechanically attached proposal, request the membrane construction, fastening layout and evidence for the proposed deck and roof assembly. Do not choose a fastening pattern from the roll width alone.
  • For an adhered proposal, identify the sheet backing, adhesive and receiving surface. Confirm their compatibility and the required preparation before ordering.
  • For a backed product, ask whether the quoted thickness is the waterproofing sheet thickness or the total including backing. Compare values measured on the same basis.

Use the construction description and relevant documentation to confirm the product. A type letter in a catalogue is not a substitute for these checks.

Our roof waterproofing overview covers several material families. This article narrows that discussion to PVC and TPO roofs; it does not replace the project specification.

Roof near a kitchen exhaust or industrial process

Identify what may reach the roof, including grease, solvents, process exhaust or cleaning agents. For either a PVC or TPO proposal, provide the specific substance, concentration, exposure temperature and duration and request written compatibility advice for the proposed product. Neither material name establishes resistance to every chemical. Resolve any unassessed exposure before finalizing the specification or placing the order.

Roof refurbishment

Record the existing layers and their condition before requesting an overlay proposal. Ask which layers will remain and what separation or preparation the proposed system requires. Obtain a layer-by-layer detail rather than assuming either membrane can go directly over the old roof.

If the substrate or existing system is unknown, identify it before finalizing the material order. Pricing a roll without resolving the assembly can leave necessary materials outside the quotation.

Compare roof performance using the right documents

Reflectance and heat

Both product families include light-colored roofing options. Compare the exact products’ tested solar reflectance and thermal emittance. ENERGY STAR explains these two properties and notes that energy benefits depend on climate and the building.

If a specification asks for a Solar Reflectance Index (SRI), request that result separately with its test reference. Do not substitute a solar reflectance fraction for SRI or promise a fixed reduction in electricity bills from the membrane name alone.

Wind, fire and specification compliance

Ask what the submitted evidence actually covers: the membrane sheet, a component or the complete roof assembly. Check the product identity, thickness, substrate and attachment against the proposed construction. A document for a different assembly is a question to resolve before approval.

List required standards and editions in the enquiry. Request the applicable TDS and supporting test reports, and check each claimed approval against its documented scope. Distinguish compliance with a material specification from approval of an entire roof assembly.

Plan welding and accessories before ordering

Specify PVC-compatible or TPO-compatible flashings, coated metal and welded components as appropriate. PVC and TPO must not be welded directly to each other. Confirm that each welded accessory is compatible with the specified membrane. A junction between systems needs an approved transition detail.

Ask for installation instructions for the supplied product. Welding settings depend on equipment, material and conditions; a temperature taken from another product is not a universal instruction. Check the equipment condition, prepare clean welding surfaces, and have the installer establish suitable settings through trial welds under the actual site conditions. Follow the specified seam inspection procedure.

For maintenance access on a TPO roof, review the TPO walkway pad selection guide. Include the walkway layout and compatibility confirmation in the accessory enquiry. A walkway product is a separate item from the field membrane.

Compare quotations on the same supply scope

Ask each supplier to complete the same schedule:

Quotation itemInformation to record
MembraneProduct code, material, reinforcement or backing, thickness and tolerances, color, roll dimensions
QuantityNet roof area, ordered area, roll count and allowance basis
ComponentsFlashings, corners, outlets, coated metal, fasteners, plates, adhesives and walkway items as applicable
EvidenceTDS revision, relevant test reports, installation instructions and any required approvals
PackingRoll weight, pallet arrangement, shipping dimensions and loading proposal
Commercial termsCurrency, unit basis, delivery terms, destination, quotation validity and lead time

Compare unit prices per square meter as well as the total supplied area. A price per roll is not comparable until the roll width and length are known. Ask whether the ordered quantity includes allowances for laps, details and cutting, and keep that allowance separate from the net roof area.

Do not compare an accessory-inclusive offer with a membrane-only offer using the roll price alone. Obtain a loading proposal based on the actual roll dimensions, weights and packing arrangement rather than reusing an SBS loading calculation.

For example, compare both offers in the same currency per square meter, at the same specified thickness and reinforcement, with equivalent accessory quantities and delivery terms. Then record any remaining difference in test documentation, installation support and warranty scope. This makes a price difference easier to assess without assuming that PVC is always more expensive or that TPO is always better value.

Send a project brief for a suitable quotation

To discuss a PVC or TPO supply option, send Tianyuan your project requirements with:

  • Project: Country, city, net roof area and available drawings.
  • Roof construction: New roof or refurbishment; deck, insulation and existing layers.
  • Membrane requirements: PVC, TPO or a comparison of both; proposed attachment, thickness, reinforcement and backing.
  • Exposure and documents: Any grease or process chemicals; required test standards and technical documents.
  • Accessories: Quantities or available roof detail drawings.
  • Delivery: Required schedule, destination port and delivery terms.

If the project specification is still being prepared, identify the open questions in the enquiry. This lets the discussion focus on a suitable configuration and the evidence needed before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Is PVC or TPO better for a commercial roof?

Either can be suitable when the specific membrane and complete assembly meet the project requirements. Compare chemical exposure, substrate compatibility, attachment, tested performance and local installation support before choosing.

Can PVC and TPO be welded to each other?

No. PVC and TPO are different materials and are not interchangeable at welded joints. Select flashings and coated metal compatible with the specified membrane. A transition requires an approved detail.

Is a white TPO roof always cooler than white PVC?

No. Compare the tested solar reflectance and thermal emittance of the exact products, including aged values where required. Material name and white color alone do not establish a performance ranking.

What should I send to request a PVC or TPO membrane quote?

Send the project location, roof area and drawings, deck and existing layers, proposed attachment method, required membrane specification, exposure conditions, accessory list, required documents, delivery schedule and destination port.

Does the same thickness mean PVC and TPO have the same performance?

No. Thickness is only one part of the specification. Compare reinforcement, backing, the stated thickness measurement, test methods and the proposed roof assembly. For backed sheets, confirm whether the quoted thickness includes the backing.
