How do you install and weld PVC waterproofing membrane?
PVC membrane is installed by mechanically fastening or fully adhering the sheets to the substrate, then hot-air welding the overlapping seams at approximately 450-550°C using an automatic welding machine (such as Leister). The heat fuses the top and bottom sheets into a single, inseparable joint that is stronger than the membrane itself. Proper welding requires clean, dry surfaces and ambient temperatures above -5°C.
Can PVC membrane be installed over existing bitumen roofing?
Yes, PVC membrane can be installed as a retrofit over existing bitumen roofing, but a separation layer (geotextile fleece or gypsum board) must be placed between the bitumen and the PVC. This prevents plasticizer migration from the PVC into the bitumen, which can cause embrittlement, and protects the new membrane from bitumen-related chemical attack.
How long does PVC roofing membrane last, and is it UV resistant?
PVC service life depends on the formulation, thickness, exposure, system design, installation quality, and maintenance. How do you repair a leaking PVC membrane seam?
PVC membrane seams can be repaired by cleaning the affected area, applying a PVC-compatible solvent cleaner, and hot-air welding a patch of the same material over the damaged seam. The patch must be round-cut at the corners to prevent peeling and should extend at least 75 mm beyond the damaged area in all directions. For extensive seam leakage, a new strip of membrane should be welded over the entire seam line rather than patching individual points.
