Product Overview

The Pre-Applied Revolution in Underground Waterproofing

Self-adhesive pre-applied HDPE waterproof membrane represents a fundamental shift in underground waterproofing philosophy. Traditional systems install the waterproofing layer on the completed concrete structure — creating a physical interface that can separate, delaminate, or channel water. HDPE pre-applied membrane inverts this sequence: the membrane is laid first, and the concrete structure is cast directly against it.

This is a different installation sequence from conventional post-applied systems. When wet concrete contacts the reactive polymer self-adhesive layer, the interface is designed to bond as the concrete cures. Actual bonding performance depends on the membrane formulation, substrate conditions, concrete placement, detailing, and installation quality; follow the project method and confirm the applicable test documentation.

TY-SHIELD™ HDPE pre-applied membrane comprises four functional layers: a high-density polyethylene film substrate for physical strength and chemical barrier performance, a reactive polymer self-adhesive compound on one surface, a protective coating, and a 70mm synthetic adhesive lap area on the long edge for field jointing. The self-adhesive layer also exhibits self-healing behavior — flowing into small punctures and construction damage when concrete is placed, sealing them during the hydration process.

Applicable standards and test methods depend on the selected product configuration and destination market. Request the product-specific TDS and available test documentation for review before specification. As a direct manufacturer, Weifang Tianyuan supports civil engineering contractors, foundation waterproofing specialists, and project procurement teams with OEM options and export documentation.

Applications

Underground Foundation & Basement

Used for basement slabs, pile caps, and deep foundation waterproofing where a bonded membrane-concrete interface is required by the project design.

Blind-Side & Retaining Walls

Ideal for diaphragm walls, secant pile walls, and subway stations where waterproofing must be installed on the outside face before the concrete structure is cast — with no access for post-application inspection or repair.

Tunnels & Cut-and-Cover

Reliable anti-seepage barrier for cut-and-cover tunnels, culverts, and underground municipal works in high-water-table conditions.

Civil Infrastructure

Specified for water treatment plants, pumping stations, lift pits, and other underground civil structures where structural waterproofing integrity is a life-cycle performance requirement.

Key Benefits

Chemical Cross-Linking Bond

The reactive polymer self-adhesive layer chemically bonds with the calcium hydroxide in curing concrete, forming a permanent covalent bond — not just physical adhesion — that cannot be separated by hydrostatic pressure or ground movement.

Dimensional Stability Under Load

Maintains integrity under extreme soil pressure, thermal cycling, and construction loads including rebar placement and concrete pouring. HDPE substrate provides structural rigidity that flexible membranes cannot match.

Cold-Applied, No Hot Work

Self-adhesive lap joints require only a hand roller — no torches, no welding equipment (optional hot-air welding also available). Safe for confined underground spaces where hot-work permits add cost and delay.

Superior Chemical & Aging Resistance

Maintains waterproof integrity after EN 1847 chemical immersion and EN 1296 accelerated aging tests. Resistant to aggressive groundwater chemistry, soil-borne contaminants, and long-term degradation in buried applications.

Installation Guide

Surface Preparation

Prepare a smooth, dense surface without bumps, cracks, holes, or standing water. Remove all sharp protrusions that could puncture the membrane during or after installation.

Geotextile & Positioning

Install geotextile protection layer as specified. Mark layout lines and unroll the HDPE membrane with the self-adhesive layer facing the direction of the future concrete pour.

Membrane Installation

Lay the membrane smoothly according to the layout lines. Ensure the 70mm synthetic adhesive lap area on the long edge is correctly positioned for overlap with adjacent sheets.

Overlap & Joint Sealing

Maintain an 80mm overlap at joints. Seal using the self-adhesive lap area with a hand roller — or optional hot-air welding for enhanced joint strength. T-junction intersections require additional treatment.

Packaging & OEM

Protective Roll Packing

Membrane rolls are supplied with core sleeves and protective wrapping to prevent deformation and damage during handling, storage, and transit.

OEM & Private Label

Custom roll labels with your company logo, product type, thickness, batch number, and barcode. Full OEM packaging and branding support for international distributors and project procurement.

Storage Requirements

Store rolls horizontally in original packaging in a dry, ventilated area below 40°C. Avoid direct sunlight and rain. Shelf life: 12 months under standard conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does pre-applied HDPE membrane prevent water channeling?
In conventional post-applied waterproofing, a physical gap exists between the membrane and the structure — any breach allows water to migrate laterally (channel) before leaking. HDPE pre-applied membrane is installed before concrete pouring with the reactive polymer layer facing the concrete. When wet concrete is cast, its cement slurry reacts and chemically cross-links with the polymer layer, forming a permanent gap-free bond. Water cannot travel between the membrane and the structure, so any potential leak is confined to the exact entry point.
What is the difference between HDPE pre-applied membrane and traditional SBS torch-applied waterproofing?
Traditional SBS membrane is installed after the concrete structure is built — it is applied to the outside face (post-applied). This creates a bonded-but-separable interface that can channel water. HDPE pre-applied membrane is installed before concrete pouring, and the self-adhesive layer chemically integrates with the concrete during curing — becoming part of the structure. For underground foundations, blind-side walls, and tunnels where post-application access is impossible, pre-applied HDPE is the technically superior choice.
Can I install reinforcement steel directly on the membrane?
Yes. The HDPE substrate and protective coating are designed to withstand the mechanical stress of rebar placement, spacer installation, and concrete aggregate impact. The self-healing polymer layer seals any minor scuffs or punctures that may occur during rebar work.
Which overlap method should I use — self-adhesive or hot-air welding?
The 70mm synthetic adhesive lap area on the long edge provides a reliable cold-applied joint — simply remove the release film and press with a hand roller. For projects requiring enhanced joint strength, additional hot-air welding is compatible. Select based on project specification and site conditions — both methods are validated under EN 13967 testing.
What is the installation temperature range?
Standard product is designed for application at 5°C to 40°C. For projects in regions with sustained ambient temperatures above 40°C, we offer a customized high-temperature formulation. Contact our technical team with your site temperature data for the correct product recommendation.
What thickness should I choose — 1.2mm or 1.5mm?
1.2mm (mass ≥1.25 kg/m²) is suitable for standard basement and foundation waterproofing with moderate soil pressure. 1.5mm (mass ≥1.75 kg/m²) is recommended for deep foundations, high-water-table conditions, tunnels, and infrastructure projects where maximum puncture resistance and durability are required. The increased mass provides proportionally greater mechanical protection during rebar and concrete work.
Do you offer OEM / private label for HDPE pre-applied membrane?
Yes. Full OEM and private-label programs available — including custom roll widths, thicknesses, branded labels, and packaging. Minimum order quantities vary by specification. Contact our export team with your project requirements for a tailored quotation and sample arrangement.
