Why JS Dominates Residential Waterproofing

JS occupies an unusual position in the waterproofing product family. It is half organic polymer emulsion and half inorganic cement powder — mixed on site, troweled onto a wall, and left to cure into something that is neither plastic nor mortar. The cement hydrates like concrete. The polymer coalesces like paint. The result bonds to the substrate not through surface adhesion, but through shared chemistry — cement to cement, no interface to fail.

This is why over 90% of residential bathroom waterproofing in China uses JS. Not because it’s the highest-spec coating available, but because it’s the only one that lets you screed and tile directly on top — eliminating the bonding primer every other polymer coating requires. For bathrooms, kitchens, and wet areas where tiles are the final surface, JS strips a full step out of the construction schedule. Per square meter, material cost runs 40–60% below single-component polyurethane coatings — when you add the eliminated labor step, the installed cost gap widens further.

Applications

Bathrooms, Kitchens, Balconies — Tiles Go Directly on Top

Over 90% of residential bathroom waterproofing in China uses JS. Not because it's the highest-spec coating available — because it's the only one that lets you screed and tile directly on top without a bonding primer. Walls, floors, under shower trays — one JS layer, then tile adhesive, then tiles.

Swimming Pools, Water Tanks, Potable Water — Immersed Long-Term

Type II and III handle 0.6 MPa anti-permeability pressure. Non-toxic, water-based formulation is safe for potable water contact. JS holds ≥80% tensile retention after alkali treatment — pool disinfectants and treated water won't degrade the coating.

Basements and Tunnels — Buried Where Nobody Can Inspect

Once a basement wall is backfilled, a leak costs more to fix than to rebuild — you're excavating. JS bonds to damp concrete at ≥0.7 MPa (Type II), which means it goes on right after formwork is stripped, before the wall has fully cured. You're not waiting for the concrete to dry before you waterproof. That pulls the entire underground construction sequence forward.

Protected Roofs — Under the Insulation, On the Slab

Type I's 200% elongation absorbs the thermal expansion and contraction of the roof slab. The JS goes directly on the concrete deck — then insulation, screed, and the waterproof membrane above it. Sunlight never hits this layer. But temperature does — and that's why elasticity matters more than rigidity here.

Color Is Your Choice — Not Ours

The polymer emulsion is white to begin with. Add whatever pigment your project needs. Blue for swimming pools — the waterproofing layer doubles as the decorative finish, no separate coating on top. Grey for balconies — matches the floor tile tone, no visible seam at the transition. White for exterior walls — reflects solar radiation, keeps the wall cooler. Color doesn't change performance. It changes which projects you can bid for.

Vertical Walls Don't Sag — Thickness Is In Your Hands

Pour the liquid into the mixing bucket first. Add powder gradually while stirring. Mix for five minutes until lump-free. Now check the consistency — too thin and it'll run down the wall. Too thick and you won't spread it. The trick: for vertical surfaces, use 10–15% less water than the package specifies. The slurry should hold its shape on a trowel like plaster, not drip off like paint.

After Alkaline Soaking, It Still Holds ≥80%

A basement wall faces groundwater, and groundwater is almost always alkaline — dissolved minerals from soil and rock. Standard polymer coatings soften, blister, and debond in alkaline conditions over months of exposure. GB/T 23445 requires JS to retain ≥80% of its tensile strength and full adhesion grade after alkali treatment. This isn't a nice-to-have. For anything buried underground, it's the minimum survival requirement.

Cold, Dry Climate — No Arc at the Inside Corner — Use Type I

Bathroom corners where the wall meets the floor — on most sites, they're sharp 90-degree angles, not rounded arcs. Coating applied in a sharp corner is naturally thinner. When temperatures drop and the building contracts, rigid coatings crack right at that thin spot. Type I's 200% elongation is there for this exact construction reality — the coating moves with the corner instead of splitting. For cold, dry regions and high-altitude projects where inside corners stay sharp, Type I is the safer choice than Type III.

Installation Guide

Clean, Level, and Drain First

Scrape off loose material and dust. Wipe away oil and grease. Patch any cracks before coating. Inside corners — if you can radius them, do it. If the corner stays sharp, choose Type I over Type III. For basements, pump out standing water first. The surface can feel damp to the touch — that's fine. It just can't have puddles.

Liquid First, Powder Second — Mix Until Lump-Free

Pour the liquid component into the bucket. Add water per the ratio on the package. Stir briefly, then add the powder slowly while continuing to stir — dumping powder too fast creates lumps that are hard to break. Mix for five minutes until the slurry is uniform, with no dry pockets visible. You've got about two hours to use it after mixing. If it starts thickening, don't add water — it won't help.

Inside Corners and Pipe Penetrations — Hit These First

Every inside corner, outside corner, pipe root, and drain surround is a potential leak point. Before you do the main area, apply 2–4 thin coats to each of these spots with a small brush, waiting for each coat to dry before the next. If the design calls for it, embed polyester non-woven fabric into the wet coating — press from the center outward with a trowel to squeeze out all air bubbles. The fabric must be fully saturated, with no dry fibers visible.

Four Coats Minimum, Alternating Direction Each Time

First coat goes on vertically. Once it's dry to the touch, the second coat goes horizontally. The third coat back to vertical. Four coats minimum, with the alternating pattern ensuring no pinhole gets missed twice. Minimum eight hours between coats — faster in summer, slower in winter. Each coat consumes around 0.8 kg per square meter. Total dry film thickness per specification — bathroom walls at 1.2mm, shower areas and pools at 1.5–2mm.

The liquid component is a polymer emulsion — it freezes and irreversibly breaks below 0°C, so winter shipping requires insulated container loading. Powder is cement-based — keep dry. Standard sizes per client specification. Palletized for container shipment.

Liquid: the emulsion separates if frozen. Powder: cement hardens on contact with moisture — reseal opened bags immediately. Shelf life: 12 months in original unopened packaging under standard conditions.

Where does the name 'JS' come from?
It's a classification created by China's waterproofing industry — J stands for Polymer and S for Cement. It's not an international standard code, and you won't find 'JS' in ASTM or EN naming systems. What the name tells you is that this isn't a one-part product — you receive a liquid emulsion and a powder bag that you mix on site. The classification system was originally adapted from Japan in the early 1990s. Today, over 90% of residential bathroom waterproofing in China is JS — not because it was mandated, but because it's the most practical solution for the specific job of waterproofing a room that's about to be tiled.
How do I choose between Type I, II, and III?
Type I — the substrate moves. 200% elongation, 1:1.2 liquid-to-powder ratio. Use it on roofs, balconies, floors with underfloor heating, and new-build rooms where minor settlement is expected. More liquid, less powder — higher flexibility, lower compressive strength. Type II — the substrate moves a little, but water pressure is the bigger concern. 80% elongation, 1:1.5 ratio. Use it on walls, basements, pools, and permanently submerged applications. Good balance of flexibility and strength. Type III — the substrate doesn't move. 30% elongation, 1.0 MPa adhesion. Use it on stable underground structures. Highest compressive strength, lowest flexibility. Think of it this way: Type I bends, Type II balances, Type III holds.
Can I apply it on damp concrete?
Damp — yes. Wet with standing water — no. A freshly stripped basement wall that looks dark and feels cool to the touch? Start coating. The cement component needs water to hydrate — you're feeding it, not fighting it. But if the wall has visible water beads, or the floor has puddles, or the surface is actively weeping — dry or drain it first. Quick test: wipe a section with a dry cloth. If the cloth comes back damp but the surface doesn't re-wet within seconds, you're ready.
When should I use JS instead of polyurethane?
[PU is the better elastomer](/products/polyurethane-waterproof-coating-factory/) — 450% to 550% elongation, suitable for exposed roofs and complex geometries. JS is the better composite — lower elongation but it bonds differently. PU adheres to concrete. JS integrates with it — cement-to-cement, no chemical interface. Three scenarios where JS wins: 1) Tiles are the final surface — PU needs a primer before tiling, JS doesn't. 2) Constant water immersion — PU can hydrolyze over years of submersion, JS is more resistant. 3) Budget — JS costs 40–60% less per square meter and saves a labor step.
Can I tile directly over JS coating?
Yes — this is JS's single biggest practical advantage over other waterproof coatings. PU and other polymer-only coatings leave a smooth, non-porous surface that tile adhesive can't grip without a bonding primer. JS leaves a cement-based surface. Tile adhesive is also cement-based. They're chemically the same family — they bond without an intermediary. Apply your last JS coat, wait until it's fully cured (24 hours summer, 48 hours winter), then tile adhesive goes directly on.
Does the self-healing actually work?
Yes — within limits. The mechanism involves two parallel processes confirmed by cementitious materials research (PMC, 2017): 1) Dormant cement particles in the cured coating rehydrate when water enters a micro-crack, forming new calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel that physically plugs the crack. 2) The polymer matrix provides elastic recovery, pulling the crack edges closer together. This dual mechanism handles micro-cracks at the 0.1mm level. Structural movement joints, expansion joints, and wide cracks require separate joint sealants — self-healing is not a substitute for proper joint detailing.
Has Tianyuan transitioned to the new GB/T 23445-2025 standard?
Yes. GB/T 23445-2025 was published in December 2025 and comes into legal effect on July 1, 2026, replacing the 2009 version. The new standard adds three major areas: long-term water resistance testing, accelerated aging tests, and environmental limits on VOC, free formaldehyde, and benzene compounds. Our production is already aligned with the 2025 requirements.
