Product Overview

Hot-Climate Roofing Engineered for Extreme Heat

TY-SHIELD™ APP (Atactic Polypropylene) modified bitumen membrane is the industry standard for high-temperature regions. Unlike rubber-modified SBS, APP uses a plastomeric polymer that ensures the bitumen remains firm and stable even when roof surface temperatures exceed 80°C under intense solar radiation.

APP vs SBS — Choosing the Right Membrane for Your Climate

Feature APP (Plastomeric) SBS (Elastomeric)
Best Climate Hot (Middle East, Africa, SE Asia) Cold (Northern Europe, Russia, N. America)
Heat Resistance 130°C (Type II) 105°C (Type II)
Dimensional Stability Excellent (Resists Sagging) Good
Low Temp Flexibility -15°C (Type II) -25°C to -30°C

Reinforcement Selection Guide

Polyester Felt (PY)

High Tensile & Elongation

Best for exposed roofing and large-area projects where structural movement is expected.

Glass Fiber (G)

Applications

Hot-Climate Exposed Roofing

The standard choice for exposed roof systems across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and tropical regions, where surface temperatures regularly exceed 80°C. Type II APP compound holds its shape at 130°C with no flow or drip, resisting the sag and slip that softens conventional bitumen sheets.

High-Temperature Industrial Roofing

Specified for factories, smelters, and process buildings where roof decks absorb radiant heat from plant operations. The plastomeric APP matrix maintains dimensional stability through repeated high-temperature cycles without embrittlement.

Commercial Roofing Systems

Used as mineral-surfaced cap sheet in multi-layer commercial roof assemblies and as a torch-applied base layer over stable substrates. Mineral granule surfaces add UV protection and foot-traffic resistance for long-service-life roofing.

Bridge & Infrastructure Waterproofing

Applied to concrete bridge decks and elevated structures in hot climates, where the membrane must tolerate both high service temperatures and thermal expansion stresses. PY and PYG reinforcements provide the required tensile performance.

Key Benefits

High-Temperature Flow Resistance

With a softening point significantly higher than SBS, our Type II APP membrane resists sliding, dripping, or deformation even on steeply sloped roofs under intense direct sunlight. It maintains a consistent thickness across the entire application area.

Superior Aging Performance

APP modification fundamentally changes the bitumen's molecular structure, making it highly resistant to oxidation and the brittle failure typically caused by long-term UV exposure in tropical environments.

B2B Customization Options

From specific reinforcement weights (PY/G/PYG) to custom surface colors and private label branding, we offer full flexibility for international distributors to tailor the product to their local market's technical and aesthetic standards.

Monolithic Seam Integrity

Optimized for high-heat torch application, the APP compound creates a robust, fused overlap. The resulting 'welded' seam ensures a continuous, watertight barrier that is resistant to the stresses of thermal cycling.

Installation Guide

Prepare the Substrate

Ensure the substrate is smooth, dry, clean, and free from loose material, sharp projections, standing water, oil, and debris. Apply compatible bitumen primer and allow it to dry fully before membrane installation.

Pre-Lay and Align

Unroll the membrane for positioning. Align overlaps (minimum 100mm side, 150mm end) and mark reference lines. Stagger end laps between adjacent rows by at least 300mm.

Torch Application

Using a propane torch, evenly heat the burn-off PE film and the substrate ahead of the roll. Move the torch in a controlled arc pattern. The bitumen coating is ready when it develops a uniform glossy melt across the full width.

Roll and Bond

As the bitumen melts, roll the membrane forward with steady, even pressure. A small bead of molten bitumen should squeeze out from the leading edge — this confirms full-width bonding. Use a roller on all seams.

Packaging & OEM

Export-Ready Pallet Packing

Rolls are stacked vertically on fumigated wooden pallets, secured with heavy-duty strapping, corner protectors, and weather-resistant stretch film for safe ocean freight transit.

Private Label & OEM

Full support for custom roll labels, barcodes, brand-name printing, and bespoke packaging design. We supply your market with your brand — minimum order quantities vary by specification.

Storage Recommendations

Store rolls vertically in original packaging, in a cool, dry, covered area away from direct sunlight. Recommended temperature: +5°C to +30°C. Shelf life: 12 months from production date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is APP modified bitumen waterproofing membrane?
APP (Atactic Polypropylene) modified bitumen membrane is a reinforced waterproofing sheet where the bitumen is modified with a plastomeric polymer. This modification gives the membrane superior heat resistance — up to 130°C for Type II grades — making it the product of choice for hot-climate roofing and exposed roof systems. It is typically installed by torch application (hot-melt), though cold-bonding methods are also compatible.
When should I choose APP instead of SBS membrane?
APP is the preferred specification for hot-climate regions (Middle East, Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia) where roof surface temperatures regularly exceed 70°C. APP's plastomeric modification provides dimensional stability at high temperatures that SBS (rubber-modified) cannot match. Conversely, SBS excels in cold climates with low-temperature flexibility down to -25°C. If your project is in a hot region with high solar exposure, APP is the right choice.
Which surface finish should I choose — PE, Sand, Mineral, or Aluminum Foil?
PE Film is the standard for non-exposed layers in multi-layer systems. Fine Sand is selected when additional inter-layer bonding or protection is needed between membrane courses. Mineral Granules (slate chips) provide built-in UV protection and a decorative finish, allowing direct roof exposure without additional coatings. Aluminum Foil provides the highest reflectivity — ideal where solar heat gain reduction and vapor barrier properties are priorities alongside waterproofing.
What is PYG reinforcement and when should I use it?
PYG (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polyester) combines a polyester mat with embedded glass fiber strands. It delivers the high tensile strength and elongation of PY with the superior dimensional stability of G — the best of both. PYG is recommended for large-area commercial roofing, high-wind zones, and infrastructure projects where thermal movement is significant and dimensional stability is critical.
Can APP membrane be installed without a torch?
Yes, APP membrane is compatible with cold-bonding adhesives where open-flame work is restricted — for example, on refurbishment projects over occupied buildings, near flammable materials, or in confined spaces. However, torch application remains the standard and most reliable method for achieving a fully bonded monolithic membrane system.
Can APP torch-applied membrane be installed on a wooden deck?
No. Torch application presents a direct fire risk on combustible substrates such as wooden decks. For wood-substrate projects, use our Self-Adhesive Bitumen Membrane (cold-applied, no flame required) or specify a cold-bonding adhesive method for the APP membrane.
What information is needed for a factory quotation?
Please provide: required thickness, reinforcement type, surface finish, project application, estimated quantity, packaging preference, and destination port. Our export team will review the details and confirm the applicable quotation, documentation, sample option, and production schedule.
What is the difference between Type I and Type II APP membrane?
Type I is the standard performance grade with 105°C heat resistance and -5°C low-temperature flexibility — suitable for most general roofing applications in moderate climates. Type II is the high-performance grade offering 130°C heat resistance, -15°C low-temperature flexibility, and higher tensile and elongation values — the recommended specification for demanding hot-climate projects, exposed roofs, and infrastructure applications.
