The SBS Membrane That Comes in a Pail

You already know SBS modified bitumen as a waterproofing material. It’s the polymer that makes your roll membrane elastic — that stretches when the building moves, that stays flexible at sub-zero temperatures, that resists the thermal cycling from sun-up to sun-down on an exposed flat roof.

This coating is the same SBS chemistry — delivered differently. Instead of being coated onto a polyester mat and rolled up at the factory, it’s emulsified in water and sealed in a steel pail. You open the pail, stir it, and brush it on. It cures by water evaporation into a continuous elastic film with no seams.

The practical advantage of this format is geometry. A 1-meter-wide roll membrane handles rectangular areas well. It handles corners, penetrations, drains, and parapets with a knife, a torch, and a lot of patience. The liquid version doesn’t fight the shape — it flows into it. For flat roof refurbishment where the existing bitumen surface stays in place, for retaining wall damp-proofing where speed matters more than precision, for detail work that would be 90% cutting and 10% waterproofing with a roll — the pail is the right tool.

Two performance grades cover the climate range. L grade holds -15°C without cracking — suited for northern and high-altitude projects. H grade takes 110°C without flowing — suited for exposed roofs in hot regions. The trade-off is real: H grade sacrifices some low-temperature flexibility for heat resistance. Pick the grade that matches your climate, not the higher number.

The coating is manufactured to JC/T 408-2005. For international specification, equivalent ASTM test methods — D2939 for solids, D5147 for heat and cold performance, E96 for vapor transmission — are documented in the TDS. Your specifier can cross-reference without translation.

Applications

Existing Roof Overcoating — No Strip, No Torch

The coating bonds to old bitumen felt, aged asphalt, and weathered roll membranes. This means a failing flat roof doesn't need to be stripped down to the deck before waterproofing. Clean the surface, patch the obvious damage, brush the coating on. No open flame on a roof where insulation or timber might be underneath. No hot-work permit. No insurance rider for torch work.

External Retaining Walls — Brush It on Before the Backfill

Damp-proofing foundation walls and retaining structures is a volume job — large flat areas where speed matters. Roller application covers 1–2 m² per liter per coat. A 20kg pail covers a 15–20 m² section. The coating cures in place, the backfill goes on, and the wall stays dry. No seams for groundwater to find.

Complex Concrete Details — Where the Roll Won't Go

Gutters. Downpipe outlets. Parapet upstands. Expansion joints. The places where cutting sheet membrane stops being installation and starts being origami. The liquid flows into these shapes. It doesn't care about the geometry. Two coats brushed in alternating directions, and every corner is covered.

Damp-Proof Sandwich Layer in Floors and Walls

Used between the structural slab and the screed as a continuous vapor-proof membrane. Applied to walls as a tanking layer before plastering. These aren't exposed applications — the coating is buried in the building assembly — but it does its job invisibly for the life of the structure.

Bitumen Bonds to Bitumen — No Stripping Required

Most polymer coatings need a clean, dust-free, oil-free surface — preferably with a bonding primer. This coating is bitumen-based. It bonds chemically to existing bitumen surfaces — old felt, aged roll membrane, previous asphalt coatings. You can overcoat a failing bitumen roof without mechanical stripping. This is not a universal property of waterproof coatings. It's a property of this specific material chemistry.

VOC Under 50 Grams Per Liter — Water Does the Work

The liquid carrier is water, not solvent. A warehouse full of pails doesn't need explosion-proof electricals. Application in a confined basement doesn't require forced-air ventilation or occupant evacuation. ASTM D3960 testing confirms VOC levels under 50 g/L — well within the most stringent international green-building thresholds. This isn't a marketing claim. It's a documented formulation parameter.

Thixotropic — Stays on the Wall, Levels on the Floor

At rest, the coating has a thick, paste-like consistency. When brushed, it thins and spreads. On a vertical wall, it holds its position without sagging or dripping. On a horizontal slab, it self-levels into a smooth, even film. This dual behavior comes from the formulation, not from on-site water adjustment or additives. Application temperature window: 5°C to 55°C — wider than many water-based coatings.

JC/T 408 with ASTM Cross-Reference

The Chinese national standard is JC/T 408-2005. For international specification, equivalent test methods are documented: ASTM D2939 for solid content and film integrity, ASTM D5147 for heat resistance and low-temperature flexibility, ASTM E96 for water vapor transmission. Installation Guide

Clean It, Don't Polish It

Sweep off loose dust. Scrape off anything flaking. Rinse off oil and grease — solvent wipe works, degreaser works, whichever you have on site. The substrate doesn't need to be sandblasted. It needs to be firm, clean, and not actively shedding material. Slightly damp is fine — standing water is not. Drain it first.

Make Your Own Primer from the Same Pail

Pour some coating into a separate container. Add about 20% clean water. Stir. That's your primer. Brush or roll it onto the substrate — it should soak in, not puddle. If the surface is very dry or porous, give it two coats of primer. Wait until it's dry to the touch before the main coat. If more than 24 hours pass before you continue, re-prime the area.

Main Coat — Brush, Roller, or Airless Spray

Stir the pail thoroughly before use — settlement during storage is normal. Apply each coat at roughly 1–2 m² per liter. For large horizontal areas, a long-handled roller is fastest. For vertical surfaces, a medium-nap roller works — the coating's body prevents sagging. For details and edges, a brush. If you're spraying, use an airless unit with a tip size matched to the coating viscosity.

Second Coat Goes Perpendicular

The first coat goes in one direction. Once it's dry to the touch — typically 2–4 hours, longer in cold or damp weather — apply the second coat at right angles to the first. The cross-direction pattern ensures any pinholes or thin spots from the first pass get covered by the second. Two coats are standard for waterproofing. Three if the substrate is rough and absorbs more material.

So this is basically liquid SBS membrane?
That's the simplest way to think about it. Same SBS polymer that gives your roll membrane its elasticity — dissolved into bitumen emulsion instead of coated onto a polyester mat. The roll membrane comes out of a factory at a fixed width. This comes out of a pail and takes the shape of whatever you brush it onto. For flat roofs with parapets, drains, and equipment stands — places where cutting roll membrane gets complicated — the liquid version eliminates the seams. For existing roofs that already have bitumen on them, the liquid bonds directly to the old surface without stripping. Same chemistry, different toolbox.
L grade or H grade — which one?
L grade handles -15°C without cracking. Use it where cold winters are the design concern — northern climates, high-altitude projects, exposed retaining walls. Heat resistance is 80°C, which is fine for most buried and protected applications. H grade goes to 110°C without flowing or dripping. Use it where heat is the limiting factor — exposed flat roofs in hot climates, surfaces under dark-colored finishes that absorb solar radiation. The trade-off: H grade's low-temp flexibility drops to 0°C. Can I apply this on a damp concrete wall?
Damp — yes. The primer coat you make by diluting the coating with water is specifically designed to penetrate damp concrete. The water in the coating and the moisture in the substrate actually help — the bitumen emulsion breaks and the film forms more uniformly when there's moderate humidity. What it can't handle: standing water, actively weeping walls, surfaces where you can see water beading or running. If the wall looks dark and feels cool to the touch, you're fine. If you can wipe water off with your hand, dry it first.
How does this compare to polyurethane waterproofing?
PU gives you higher tensile strength (2.45 MPa) and similar elongation (450–550%). This coating gives you comparable elongation (≥600%) at lower cost per square meter, with one practical advantage: bitumen-to-bitumen bonding. If you're waterproofing over an existing bitumen surface — an old felt roof, a previous asphalt coating — PU needs a primer and may not bond reliably. This coating is chemically compatible — it fuses with the old bitumen layer. For new construction on clean concrete where budget allows, PU is the premium option. For refurbishment, large-area damp-proofing, and value-engineered projects, this coating is the practical choice.
Do I really not need a separate primer?
No separate primer purchase. You dilute some of the coating from the same pail — roughly 20% water — and that's your primer. If the substrate is highly absorbent or dusty, two primer coats are recommended. The primer penetrates and seals the surface. Then the full-strength coating goes on top. This isn't a cost-cutting shortcut that compromises performance — it's the specified application method. The chemistry works because the primer and the topcoat are the same material, just at different viscosities.
What fire precautions do I need for application?
The coating is water-based — it's non-flammable in liquid form and while curing. This is the primary reason contractors choose it over solvent-based bitumen coatings for occupied buildings and confined spaces. Standard construction site precautions apply: fire extinguisher on site, adequate ventilation in enclosed areas, and personal protective equipment — gloves, eye protection, protective clothing. The dried coating film is combustible, like any organic material, but during application there is no fire hazard from the product itself.
How long does a pail last once opened?
The shelf life of an unopened pail is 12 months from the production date under standard storage. Once opened, reseal the lid tightly. If the surface of the coating skins over between uses — a thin dry film on top — peel it off. The material underneath is still good. Avoid repeatedly opening and closing the pail over weeks — once you start a job, plan to finish the pail within the same project phase.
